A design phase? Hmmph. Who needs to design something. It’s just a waste of time. Plus you don’t get any billable hours for designing something. How about research and development? Hmmph again. You can’t bill research and development. Just go get an old car, slap some new paint on it, maybe replace a windshield, get rid of some of the old stuff and replace it with some new stuff, tune up the engine, and presto! you have a car. Then give the car to the client who promptly places it in the garage never to be driven except when something goes wrong.
Inefficient? Yes. A poor product? Yes. That’s what most of the legal industry produces. I’ve practiced law for over 14 years and have seen this process first hand. Vellum intends to turn this around and design, create, test, and produce legal products for small to medium sized businesses. The first product is currently in the works.
